IBM New Chip "Living Brain"

IBM along side DARPA, have created the worlds first two working prototypes of a "neurosynaptic chip", based on the synapses and neurons of the human brain. What does this mean? Simple, means these first generation computing cores represent a major leap in speed, power, and efficiency in the computing world. Built on "45 nanometer silicon/metal oxide semiconductor platform, both chips have 256 neurons." Each unique chip has the ability to learn form its own actions, proving a leap forward into A.I. They were modeled of the pattern from the "brain" as a unique chip system that would is the first of its kind to ever exist. IBM's goal is to build a chip system with 10 billion neurons and 100 trillion synapses that would consume only 1-kilowatt-hour of electricity and fit inside a shoe-sized box. That is the clear goal and with these new chip much progress has been made. Although these current chips are still  billions and trillions of numbers away from what IBM wants, working along side DARPA and being funded by the SyNAPSE program could yield much faster results. Still, this new chips are already being called the rise of true A.I as the computing components are modeled by that of  a human mind; it allows them to learn by itself by their own actions.
Whether or not these will benefit humanity are a no brainer. They will allow us to get into new fields of technology not possible years ago, but the question is whether or not these chips  may become "too smart" even for us humans to understand.

yh bt its the inventions like these tht will allow machines to take over the world :p a chip tht can learn from its own actions D:

terminator here we come!

Wow the innovation is too fast for me to grasp my head around.

I was reading about this last night amazing

I have read about this, there are other companies doing the same, the funny thing is that being a neuron based processor it needs to be fed... so will will we be expected to put a drop of protein every few days in the CPU, otherwise the tissue will die LOL!

This is extreme lol

Led on by heaven, and crownd with joy at last: Following!

HAH! I loved the Terminator comment. Technology is moving so fast these days.....

Wow, impressive. Is there anything technology can't do?

Learning hardware. Just hope "Skynet" isn't in my lifetime hahaha

Amazing

Oh technology..I've studied the anatomy of the brain quite a bit, it's boggles the mind knowing how much is actually in there...

I have a feeling that the singularity is going to be soon

Wow, they finally got to the next step. I thought we were going to be stuck for longer than this.

wow, it looks like to be a great chip!I love 45nm CPUs! :P

DERPA you said? lol
Man, soon scientists will replace our brains with this stuff. :/

Hento the loony repairman :D said...

soon and sooner we will craft a processor capable of matching our brains (in performance and capacity) but they will never have a soul!!!! , scary ;c

ShadedGaming said...

They've been saying that the latest CPU cores and chips are replicas of the "human brain" since the '70s.

read about this stuff earlier, pretty amazing if you asked me. technology is advancing at such an exponential rate.

thats insane! i wonder how much itll cost when released to public...

Hope we will always out think machines :D

On our way to positronic brains? Isaac Asimov would be proud!

Siveon said...

It's just a matter of time now! One of these days....!

this is great but also sounds like another step into A.I. which skeptics would then think machines could take control hahaha.

Living Brain had me worried about the robopocalypse. Haha

hey! Nice post :P, check my blog!

Kinda scary. Robots will have a brain in a small chip, which would make our brains inferior. They could advance, and it all goes iRobot.

Will Smith better be ready...

I've read about this, it will only be a matter of time before skynet will kill us all haha!

This is fricking insane, the things they're doing with technology these days. What if they made one of these so powerful it could function as a replacement human brain? Some scary thoughts..

That's amazing. I love reading about tech like this. It feels like the first real steps toward the sci-fi future everyone imagines. Followed!

Great research, this is amazing.

An then it becomes self aware, goes threw the naming and figuring out things process like the sperm whale from the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy and then takes over the world.

Awesome device, it can be very useful, but I'm always worried when I hear about AI. It really could get out of our control if it is able to evolve. Awesome post again.

Read about this today. I guess you can play video games with a computer now?!

It's the beginning of the end.

cool shit... have you read up on braingate? it was a project trying to get computers to decode brain waves.... cant wait to see future technologies that incorporate computers and our brain.

This is extremely fascinating. I don't believe that this kind of stuff is actually invented during my lifetime..
